The Dog Adoption Story Behind It All

The Dog Adoption Story Behind It All

We all love a heartwarming dog adoption story, right? Read on to find out the stories behind my two, wonderful pups!

Levi

It was a cozy night in March of 2015, and I was on the couch doing some homework on my laptop. I had wanted my own dog for quite some time, but I knew that it would be tough while going to school full-time and working 5 nights a week. Every once in a while I’d search the local humane societies and dream of the day I got to bring my very own best friend home. On this particular night, I got on the Memphis Humane Society‘s website and did my usual browsing. There were so many cute puppies! My heart was melting as I saw each of their faces, wishing I could adopt every single on of them. I finally got to the last page, and there was a single dog left.

His name was Starfox, and my heart immediately started racing. This was my future dog. I just knew it. It was 5 minutes until they closed, so I called up and asked if he was still available or if anyone had applied for him yet. To my surprise, no one had! I visited him as soon as the shelter opened up the next morning, and he was perfect. He was curious, gentle, and SO handsome! I filled out my application and anxiously awaited for a phone call. The very next day, I got the phone call that I could take him home and officially call him mine. My roommate and I jumped in the car and raced to the shelter to pick up Starfox- now known as Levi.

He was nervously waiting for us, unsure of what the future held. The workers at the humane society told us he had been in and out of shelters his entire life (one year at this point) and that he was dealing with a few health issues – like Demodex and a knicked ear. Luckily, it didn’t take long for him to warm up and become a loving, crazy, wonderful pup. He was finally able to be carefree- and boy, did he take advantage of that! He loved to destroy pillows and toys, run circles as fast as he could in the backyard, and pout when we wouldn’t give him a bit of our food. He was the perfect dog for me, and quite literally my soulmate. I couldn’t imagine life without him. A little less than a year later, though, I realized that such a social, wonderful dog deserved a companion…

Quincy

Soon after I realized Levi could use a companion, I began searching around at shelters to find the perfect pup. I eventually made my way to the Collierville Animal Shelter. They were super busy, so I only got the chance to do a very quick walkthrough to see all their adoptable dogs. Each dog had a different president’s name, and when we got to the end, my tour guide asked if there were any dogs I wanted to take out and play with. I have a terrible short-term memory, so I threw out the only name I could remember- Jefferson. I quickly realized that was a wonderful choice, because out walked a 4 month old puppy with the biggest personality!

This puppy was clumsily rolling around, playing with every toy in the vicinity, and giving out all the kisses in the world. He was found running around after a series of tornadoes in the area, and they could never find anyone that he may have belonged to. His tail was recovering from a possible fracture, but other than that, he was super healthy and surprisingly not scared of anything! (Later I would find out that he was terrified of storms- which makes sense given his history.) I filled out an application and brought Levi to visit him the next day. They got along so well that I immediately brought him home. I decided to name him Quincy, after one of my favorite artists ScHoolboy Q. Little did I know, there is a big difference between adopting a 4 month old and 1 year old dog… I’ve never had to learn patience as quickly as I did with Quincy! He chewed up every pair of cute shoes I had, but it was so hard to stay angry with his cute, expressive face. It was difficult, but the experience was so worth it and I’m glad to have this wonderful dog adoption story to tell. Plus now I have two crazy dogs full of personality.
