COVID-19: Working from Home with Pets

Mar 27 2020

Life has been pretty crazy lately, huh? Many of us are now working from home as we try to prevent this outbreak from getting any bigger. If you’re anything like me, the first few days were kinda fun. I got to spend lots of time with my pets, wear sweatpants to work, and snack as much as I want with no judgment. Now that over a week has gone by… it’s a little more difficult. As much as I love my dogs, they are driving me crazy during my work hours. If you’re in the same boat, I have some tips to help us out!

Extra Long Morning Walk

Instead of using all of your extra time in the morning to sleep in, take your dogs for an extra long walk. Hopefully there won’t be too many people out, but make sure to keep your distance as much as possible. If you’re anxious to walk around the neighborhood, try to find a secluded trail nearby or play extra hard in the backyard. The more energy your dogs get out now, the less they’ll want to bother you later in the morning. Also consider taking a short 15 minute break during your morning work to let them get some more fresh air.

New Toys

If you live in Memphis, Hollywood Feed offers free same-day delivery on orders $75 and up. This would be a great time to stock up on some new toys to keep your pets busy without having to break quarantine! I would recommend a chew toy and a couple of plush toys, but make sure to research each product and use your own judgment on safety. Throw in an extra bag or two of pet food to hit the free delivery mark; otherwise, delivery fees are only $5.95. They also offer curbside pickup right now if you’d rather save a few extra bucks and get just the essentials.

Background Noise

I live in a busy neighborhood, so my dogs are always barking at the things they hear outside. It sounds simple, but having some background noise has been the biggest help in getting my dogs to stay calm. Plus, you get to watch your favorite shows or listen to your favorite songs while working! I try to keep something soothing going, such as jazz music or Chill With Bob Ross. It’s a good time to check out some new music and shows, though, so play whatever you’re feeling in the moment!

Hopefully these few tips will help you while working from home. Remember to set some time aside to love on your pets, and be thankful you don’t have to quarantine alone. Stay safe and STAY AT HOME!
